JENIFER CROWELL
I am a self-taught artist. I began my journey into painting
in the early nineties, after leaving a family business of 3
dimensional advertising. I was always inspired by these
fun pop-ups as a child, but never had the desire to be a
salesperson. So I left and continued my pursuits of theatre
and clowning and began to explore painting.

I am known as “SkyBlue”, a silent clown for Duke Children’s Hospital and many other
events. I have performed on stage in many plays in the Triangle area and New England. I
work with a Murder Mystery Troupe in Durham and also with one that performs in
Beaufort. I am also known as “Jump’in Jen”, a pirate for Mystery Tours and the Ghost
Walks. I have also done work in film and on TV.
After having grown up in New England mostly, I tried the city life in Boston, NYC and
Chicago and finally ended up in North Carolina. Carrboro, Wrightsville Beach, and now
Beaufort is home.
As time goes on, I find myself drawn to explore the feelings of people and places with
paint. I use my imagination and insights to express my appreciation of a variety of
people, the wonders of nature and passage of time. My goal is to capture the essence of
people, nature or feeling at a point in time and to allow the viewer to feel and imagine as
well. I work with acrylics, watercolors, gouache, and mixed media.
I am largely influenced by scenes in my neighborhood which is home for many African
Americans. I am always spellbound by the loving spirit of my neighbors who take the
time to sit down and share stories together and truly look out for each other. They seem
to know naturally how to pause and smell the roses.
My series on the migrant workers developed from my travels back and forth from the
coast to the Triangle. Driving off the beaten path I came upon some workers diligently
gathering sweet potatoes in the hot September sun. I thought about how challenging
physical farm work is and the toll it takes on one’s body throughout the different
seasons. I considered the possibilities of each worker’s life experience and how they
might feel. Many are so far from their friends and families and struggle to provide from a
distance, while others are starting a new life in a foreign land. This issue is sensitive to
many, however, no matter what, the fact remains that our good Earth continues to
provide us with delicious sweet potatoes and beautiful hard working souls who help to
bring them to our tables.
Travels out west camping with two cats and partner brought some interesting people into
my life. A trip to Hong Kong, Guangdong and Bangkok with my father for his business
allowed me to experience the serenity and diligence of the Asian people. My neighborhood
cherry tree I was in love has since been chopped down. And finally, my obsession with our
mysterious and wonderful sea will always allure me to spontaneously dive right in!
My studio is open at 215 Marsh Street in Beaufort. www.artbyjencrowell.com
